Everyone’s pain matters. We believe this from the bottom of our souls. But everyone’s pain does not get treatment. Sadly, there are many who are not able to obtain even simple procedures which would mean drastic improvement for their daily lives. They go through each day without the hope of healing, wondering if anyone cares. This is the story for hundreds in El Progreso, Honduras.
Since 2009, we have held almost yearly surgical brigades in Honduras, Central America by partnering with Iglesia Bautista El Faro, a Bible-believing church located in this community. Our short-term medical trips have affected the community in powerful ways. This continued relationship with El Faro opened the door to coordinate with the local public hospital in El Progreso, providing pre-op evaluations, surgery, and post-op care to long lists of patients that the hospital was unable to help. These people have been waiting for months or even years to have simple, but life-changing procedures that they have little hope of receiving without our assistance. In response to the desperate need for surgical care in this area, we constructed an 8,000 square-foot surgical center to accommodate surgical teams who wish to help this community and the surrounding areas. This is Medical Missions Outreach’s first permanent location outside of the United States.
Our local staff works with the local hospital’s social worker and Iglesia Bautista El Faro to evaluate each patient’s physical, financial, social, and spiritual needs to enable our teams to minister most effectively. Common general surgical procedures include hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and other soft tissue cases. Orthopedic and palate repair are always needed. We are currently working to procure funding for equipment to enable us to offer cataract surgeries as well. Iglesia Bautista El Faro provides spiritual counseling and emotional support throughout each patient’s procedure and recovery.

Meeting missionaries Matt and Dallita Goins and their boys, Joash, Jadon, and Justus, may change your perspective on missions entirely. This family is making a multi-generational impact in Central America through faithfulness and a strong commitment to discipleship. We have had the distinct privilege of partnering with Team Honduras since 2006. We now send multiple teams each year, in an effort to meet the overwhelming needs of the resilient people of this community. Pastor Matt shares that he regularly witnesses needs due to “Socialized health care with long lines, scarcity of medical supplies, and lack of interest in the patient as a person.” His goal in partnering with MMO is to “give our church people a unique way to serve our community and have a focus on others; see souls saved and added to the church.”
Iglesia Bautista El Faro was planted in 2005 to be a light in a dark place. This multifaceted church is home to a Bible Institute, children’s home, and MMO’s Rearick Surgical Center. This team is made up of several missionary families, all of whom have unique talents that they are using for God’s glory.

Country Information
El Progreso is called "The Pearl of the Ulúa" because of its location along the banks of one of Honduras' largest rivers, the Ulúa. It has a population of around 250,000. El Progreso has a strategic location along the northern tourism corridor and is located in the fertile Valle de Sula (Sula Valley), which cultivates bananas, sugar cane, and palm oil.
The national economy depends on textile factories, tourism, and local agricultural production, including coffee. Honduras does struggle with economic poverty, but the county is rich in natural beauty with much of the country being covered with mountains and forests and is home to one of the largest ancient Mayan ruins.
Honduras is a historically Catholic nation, but Evangelical Christianity, mostly of a charismatic/Pentecostal variety, has made strong advances in recent years. Along with the presence of Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, the spiritual climate of Honduras could be best described as "religious confusion." Because of the deeply religious and economic poverty in the region, Honduras is ripe for a spiritual harvest.
