Host Information
Brent and Sara George, Alex Vlad

Brent and Sara George along with their sons Noah and Justin are serving as missionaries to the gypsy people in northwest Romania. Pastor George grew up in a Christian home and was saved around the age of 12 and surrendered to full-time ministry at 18. He is currently a church planter in gypsy villages and also takes ministry trips to Ukraine. You will be working with the George family and their Romanian ministry partner, Alex Vlad, in a somewhat secluded, Romanian-speaking village in western Ukraine.

This team prays that the small church in this area will experience growth both spiritually and numerically. It is challenging for the Romanian villagers to receive the medical care they need due to financial limitations and racism. Despite this, Pastor George says he loves how these people groups have come together during the war, and how those living in Romania are working together to help various ethnic groups throughout Ukraine.

Trip Description

The lives of Ukrainians have been turned upside down by the ongoing war, but Ukraine is much more than just this crisis. It has a rich history and unique heritage. Although commonly thought of as Eastern Europe, Ukraine is actually the geographic center of the continent. At about the size of the state of Texas, it is one of the largest countries in Europe. Most of Ukraine consists of fertile plains (known as steppes), with the Carpathian Mountains in the west, and the mountainous Crimean Peninsula in the south. Our clinic is in Poroshkovo, located in the Carpathian Mountains in the northwestern part of the country, an area with some of the poorest villages in Ukraine.

People lived in what is now Ukraine as early as the 5th century before Christ; these early residents included Greek and Gothic tribes, the Scythian kingdom, and the Slavs. More modernly, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union from 1922 until the Ukrainian parliament declared independence in 1991.

The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian; in 1934, it was ranked as the second most melodious language (behind only Italian) and the third most beautiful language (behind French and Persian). The Ukrainian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which consists of 33 letters. Twenty additional languages are regularly spoken in Ukraine, and 18% of Ukrainians speak English.

The country is nicknamed the “Breadbasket of Europe” because it boasts the ideal conditions for growing wheat, rye, and corn. Ukraine is also the world’s largest producer of sunflower seeds, and across every part of Ukraine, you’ll see stunning fields of these yellow blooms. Most dishes in Ukraine contain some type of grain, and most Ukrainians eat vegetables such as cabbage, beet, and potatoes every day. Borscht, a soup made from beets and beef, is considered the national dish.
