Santa Rita, Honduras

Host Information
LeRoy and Amber Rolston; Hope Baptist Church/Iglesia Bautista Esperanza

Have you met LeRoy and Amber Rolston yet? If not, you are missing out! They have served in Honduras since 2008 and have five children: Lee, Callie, Jake, Cora, and Selah. They worked with veteran missionaries for several years while they learned the language and culture. Then the Rolstons planted Hope Baptist Church in a storefront in Santa Rita in 2011.

If you have served with us in El Progreso, you weren’t too far from the Rolstons! They are located in a smaller town just to the south, where healthcare is a major concern for the average citizen. There is one general clinic but no local hospital; patients must drive to the public hospital in El Progreso, which is 30 minutes away.

The Rolstons’ ministry has many outreach programs for the youth of Santa Rita, including ministries in public schools and neighborhood Bible clubs. They have also run a local Christian school, Hope Christian Academy!

Pastor LeRoy shares that Santa Rita is a town located at the foot of some beautiful mountains in the Sula Valley. The weather is intense. When it rains, it really rains and when it's hot, it's really hot. He says, our people are friendly, hospitable, and amaze us regularly with their resourcefulness.

Trip Description

Situated between El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize, Honduras is the second-largest country in Central America but also the least-visited by tourists. Decades of gang violence, drug wars, and political corruption mean most people skip it. Honduras struggles with economic poverty, and in rural areas, healthcare is difficult to access. A third of the economy in Honduras is derived from agriculture, with major exports including sugar, bananas, palm oil, and coffee.

Speaking of coffee, Honduras has perfected the granita de café, a cold blended sweetened coffee. It’s a great way to help cool you and keep you going in the middle of the day. Another food to watch out for is the baleada –a fresh flour tortilla with Honduras’s flavorful refried beans and crumbled queso duro (a hard salty white cheese). You can add chicken, egg, avocado, or sour cream, but you may not want to mess with the delicious original!

Our plan is to offer medical, optical, soul care, and physical therapy care to this community. Every patient who receives care will hear the gospel from a member of this local church.
